English

In turbulent and unpredictable environments, decision-making, particularly regarding key and influential decisions such as strategy selection, becomes highly challenging. Under changing and variable conditions, classical strategy-selection approaches and multi-criteria decision-making techniques lose effectiveness. Traditional scenario-planning approaches also struggle in turbulent environments because of their inherent limitations and oversimplification. In response to these shortcomings, the Matrix Approach to Robustness Analysis (MARA) was introduced, which can solve the strategy-selection problem without computational limitations. However, this approach suits a conservative decision-maker who aims to choose a strategy with minimal risk. Therefore, it does not yield desirable results when the decision-maker seeks to capitalize on emerging opportunities. In this study, building on the MARA methodology and the concept of system antifragility, we introduce an antifragility-analysis approach to the strategy-selection problem. In this approach, after listing decision alternatives and defining scenarios based on key environmental indicators, the performance of strategies is determined for each indicator state. The total performance of each strategy in each scenario is then compared with its performance in the baseline scenario (current state). The proposed approach is demonstrated through a case study. In practice, this analysis identifies which strategy (decision) generates greater benefits for the organization (decision-maker) when any influential environmental indicator changes (scenario shift). This concept contrasts with robustness analysis, which considers the strategy with the least risk under change as superior. Using this tool in turbulent environments can assist managers in the business management process.
